Laulu väelle Vellamon
a work based on Finnish mythology and water-related myths.
The piece draws its story from the tale of Aino found in the Kalevala, exploring both the origins and background of the story as well as its continuation.
Elias Lönnrot wrote the tale of Aino, basing it on several stories found in Finnish folklore. In the Kalevala, Aino is destined to be the bride of Väinämöinen but chooses to drown herself instead. Laulu väelle Vellamon presents the creators’ interpretation of what happened to Aino after she drowned and entered the realm of water.
The means of storytelling include dance, theater, singing, and music. The work is partially immersive, inviting the audience to dance the water kingdom’s waltz at the end. The piece features the Vellamo puppet created by Anu Nummelin.
