Dance movement therapy is the psychotherapeutic use of movement to promote emotional, social, cognitive, and physical integration.
Dance movement therapy is a psychotherapeutic form of treatment that uses the body and movement to explore and express emotions, experiences, and thoughts. Its core premise is that the body and mind form an integrated whole: physical experiences are reflected in psychological wellbeing and vice versa.
In dance movement therapy, movement becomes a medium for communication, insight, and change. The process may incorporate spontaneous movement, breathing patterns, bodily awareness, and movement imagery, depending on the needs of the individual or group. It does not require any dance skills; instead, it focuses on strengthening self-understanding and self-awareness through movement.
Key aims include releasing stress and tension, supporting emotional regulation, clarifying body image, enhancing social interaction, and promoting holistic wellbeing.
I am currently studying a Master’s of Dance Movement Therapy at Universidad Autonoma de Barcelona.
